TOURNAMENT RULES
LAST UPDATED: JULY 31, 2012

----- Please Note: These rules may be outdated for current tournaments. Please refer to current event posts and staff member for the most recent rule-set additions and revisions. -----

Our Cause
As many of you already know, our main point of interest here at Chip Damage is our fighting game tournaments. Although these events are used to determine the top players in Central Canada in some of the top fighting games, this isn't the only reason we hold these events. We work to bring together a niche community of serious & casual players and friends in a social aspect of gaming. Tournaments are a great place to meet new friends and rivals who share a common goal in becoming more established in competitive gaming.

We are a group that considers ourselves to be serious when it comes to the competitive fighting game scene, and, just like anyone else, we enjoy leisure side of life. But, we also work hard at what we do in order to make a name known for ourselves in the world of competitive fighters.

And for these reasons, a set of rules and guidelines have been set in place to make our tournaments both enjoyable and fair game with the least amount of complications and disputes as possible. These rules can change over time, as we do follow in the footsteps of the Evolution tournament ruleset as they tend to be the global standards. It is the responsibility of the player to recognize and acknowledge these rules and guidelines before they enter any of our tournaments. If you are unsure or if any of our rules are unclear in any way, feel free to ask any of of the staff, judges/officials, or directors whom which you can find at any of our events or on our IRC channel.

Terminology
Some terms may be based from Evolution's set of tournament definitions

BracketA chart consisting of every player in the corresponding tournament as well as displaying who will play whom as the event progresses. The bracket determines fair play and overall knowledge of placement for each and every player throughout the tournament. Chip Damage will most commonly use the "double elimination" bracket consisting of both an A(Winners) & B(Losers) side.

Match

A pairing between two players displayed on the bracket. These two players play each other, usually in a best 2/3 game basis, to determine who moves forward in the bracket.

Game

Other than the obvious physical copy of the game, a game in tournament play, consists of a player winning best 2/3 rounds.

Round

A single fight in a series of rounds. There tends to be at least 2 and up to 3 rounds in tournament games(dependent on the game being played).

Director

The person or people responsible for running the tournament as well as keeping the bracket updated and accurate.

Judge

Usually multiple people(Chip Damage staff) assisting the Director by watching over matches to ensure fair game, assist in resolving disputes, and enforcing rules and regulations during an event. They may also be referred to as "Tournament Officials".

Macros

Usually a mechanical or computer instruction that sets in motion a series of unaided, automatic instructions that do not require manual input from the player.

Button Configuration

A means within the game to change which action within that game will occur when a specific button is pressed on a game controller.

Controllers

Within the context of fighting games, controllers usually refers to the following:
Arcade StickA game controller designed for arcade type games such as Street Fighter. Usually consists of a stick and up to 8 buttons on a flat surface each assigned to a different attack within the game's parameters.

Pad

Playstation 2/3, Gamecube, Xbox360 Controllers are all considered pad.

Fight Pad

A pad controller usually designed specifically for fighting games.

Double-Blind Pick

When both players declare, out of secrecy to either the tournament director or tournament officials, their character selection. Each player must then proceed to choose that character for that round.

Registration
  • All participants must register at the event in advance to the scheduled tournament start time.
  • Entry into the tournament after the registration period expires is generally not allowed, but may be accepted at the discretion of the Director/Staff of Chip Damage.
  • Entry fees are non-refundable.

General Rules
  • Each tournament will have a director assigned to it. This tournament director will assign match-ups, answer questions and most importantly, be the one you report match results to. If the director is currently playing a tournament match, wait until they are done to report your results or report your results to one of the tournament officials.

Hardware/Software Bans
  • Hardware macros, rapid-fire, or other hardware assisted mechansims are strictly forbidden.
  • Intentionally using game freezing glitches may cause you to forfeit the round. Obviously such a thing is hard to judge but the director will use their own discretion

Restrictions
  • Playstation 3 wireless pads are strictly forbidden within tournament play.  PS2 pads hooked up to converters and SF4 FightPads are allowed but wireless are not.
  • Winner must use their chosen character in the next round (does not carry onto other match-ups, unless in team tournaments). Loser may change character if they wish.
  • Accidentally pausing the game at any time during the fight may force you to forfeit the round(not the match), solely at a judge's discretion.
  • Please check your button configurations BEFORE your match starts. Checking them in the middle of the game interrupts the flow of the match and stalls the tournament. Even if you play on default settings, check your button configurations to be sure, as the person playing before you may not have been playing on a default button configuration.
  • When picking a character in Team Tournaments you must stay with that character through out the whole tournament. You cannot choose a different character, even in a new match-up.

Formats
  • All tournaments will use double elimination format unless otherwise specified.
  • Matches will be run in best 2 out of 3 games outside the game's own round settings, with the Winner's, Loser's and Grand Finals being best 3 out of 5 games.

Accessibility
  • Players may request a double-blind pick as long as it is confirmed with the tournament director.
  • If the players do not agree on a stage within 15 seconds the match judge will enforce blind random stage select.

Player Expectations
  • We expect players to have their controllers/stick ready. They may borrow a controller from someone if it is permitted by the owner of the controller. When we call a match and the player is waiting for a controller, they have 5 minutes until they forfeit that match.
  • We expect all players participating in a tournament to be present at the time the tournament bracket is being run. Players that are not present when their tournament match is scheduled will forfeit that match. We ask that players who plan to be absent when their tournament match is scheduled to confirm with the tournament director. We will delay that match as long as possible until it breaks the flow of the tournament, in which the absent player will automatically be forfeited in that match.

  • The winner of a game may change characters.
  • Winner of a game must select their character before the opponent player chooses.
  • Players who wish to have the game paused must request that their opponent pause the game. Rule updates for 3S Doubles, CVS2 and SCIV.

- CVS2 matches will be single game and 2 out of 3 in Winner's, Loser's and Grand Finals.

- 3S Doubles will still be single game but will then be 2 out of 3 in Winner's, Loser's and Grand Finals.  2/3 applies to the team match, not each individual battle.

I just wanted to mention that the general tournament rules for SCIV has changed, with almost all major regions adopting this ruleset.

Algol and Hilde are banned. All other standard characters, including Star Wars characters are legal.
All Customs, including Angol Fear, Ashlotte, Kamikirimusi, Scheherezade and Shura are banned.
"... if I were to draw analogies, I'd say SF4 = ping pong, MvC3 = hockey + football in a minefield, whereas SC4 = joust on american gladiators." -Dragonfall

SCV: Nightmare
SCIV: NM, Zasalamel
BB: Hakumen
VF5FS: Sarah
TTT2: Team TKD
