Hey. My name's Ian. I recently graduated from UofM comp sci. Sometime around then I got into SFIV, having avoided playing fighting games since playing SF2 in arcades as a kid. Once I got into SF4 and I gained an understanding of how the game works, and how tactical on a base level the game is, I got kinda hooked. I'm pretty sure I still qualify as a noob shoto atm, so I'm trying to improve my game to a decent level. It seems like you guys are trying pretty hard to foster a fighting game community in Winnipeg, so props to you guys.

Um. But if you wanna check out some cool stuff:
http://www.ninj4comic.com, a webcomic I made (some of them were in the U of M newspaper way back when I bothered submitting them)
http://ianholowka.com/music.html, some random tunes I've made for stuff.

But yeah, good stuff here... thinking of maybe showing up to some event, if I figure my playstyle can handle some humiliation ;)

Welcome to the community. We've been around for about 3 years actually, almost 4 now, so we're not trying as hard as we used to now :P, but with SFIV around the numbers have gone up quite a bit. Hope to see you around the events, don't worry if you're newb or whatever, we have plenty of people to show you the ropes.

Hey,

My name is Kris, I went to the gathering on July 3 and had a blast.  Everyone was way friendly and I met some great people like James and Kyle.  I'm a graduate of Winnipeg Technical College (Production Art) and The Art Institute of Toronto (2D Art & Animation).

I've been looking for a group like this since I moved back to Winnipeg and I'm so glad I did.  Ironically, I'm moving to Japan by the end of August so I hope to come down to as many Fridays as I can.

Welcome to the scene.  I'm sure I saw you there but we were mid ranbat so I told you to play on the casual section.  I wasn't sure if you were just a student hanging around or there to play.  I'll make sure to talk to you next time.

Welcome, Bryson!
It sounds as though you have quite the life story, dancing and Street Fighter, quite the mix. Probably a first for this scene. I'll hit you up on XBL.
And, make sure to come out to our gatherings. We are usually at the UofM on Thurs/Fri.

Hi,

My name is Danny. Im very new to sf4, wanted to join the tourney @ driven, but have to work that day. I've always liked fighting games, but never had anyone to challenge in person.  online players who are better than me, cant go and teach me right on the spot. im hoping to join the sci lounge tourney in august.

umm, when do you have "gatherings", what time on thurs and friday? can i just come by and play? who do I ask for if i wanted to join into the matches? whats the average age group? i hope im not too old !!?!?

problem right now is I play on xbox, using the controller, after a couple months of sf4, i've realized everyone plays it on the ps3, so im trying to get my hands on it on the ps3.

Browse the PSN/Live ID thread and you'll see there are SF players for both consoles here.  The only problem you'll have at gatherings is getting used to a ps3 pad or an arcade stick.  So long as you aren't rough with the latter I'm sure a vast majority of the people here will have no problem lending you their stick when its your turn to play.

Thursday and fridays are generally the days people go to the university but since Evo is happening in Las Vegas no one is likely to show this week.  A few however are planning on heading over tomorrow (wednesday) to lend some last minute practice for those who are going to the States for the tournaments.  There will be SFIV, but also likely Blazblue and HDR tomorrow too, if you're thinking of heading out.

As for average age, I'm going to have to take a blind guess and say 24ish?  At 28 I'm among the older gamers but there are a few old folks in the 30s.  AFAIK no one has yet to be discriminated against for their age.  Unless they're like 12, and immature?  Or act like they're 6.  Like nYo does at times.

He acts a little more mature than that....at least 8 years old

Welcome to the scene, hit me up on the 360, that's where I play SF4 online. Gamertag: Cynixx

Don't worry about age here, we all get along, there are some in their late 20s, some even in their teens still. I'm one of the younger ones at 21.
